before & after // our livingroom

The old never lack for a story when they're standing in the sun or in front of a warm fireplace.

When we first walked into the house on our viewing, the living room was the first room we ventured into. There was a fire going and it was so cozy. We were so excited that there was a masonry fire place with a wood stove installed. A fire place was not on our "must have's" list,  but it sure was an extra we would hope to have one day. All we can picture now for this room is a huge Christmas tree, a hot beverage and a roaring fire with mittens drying on the hearth, surrounded by family and friends.

The living room has three large windows shaded by our four large Oaks. There is Oak hardwood for flooring. This was our last room to renovate other than sanding and finishing our hall floors. There was wallpaper that was painted a sage colour on the walls so that had to be removed before we did anything. Our fire place hearth also had to be extended forward for insurance reasons before November 2015, so we figured while everything was out of the room, we may as well start stripping wallpaper. We were so blessed that the wallpaper came off so easily in huge strips. It took less than an hour! Our friend Mike Hilverda who is a mason by trade, extended our hearth. We used the original stones that were there as well as flat granite pieces to fill in at the back...thank you Mike! Mike also did our outside brick restoration work, please check out the blog post to see more.

Our vision for this room was to have it rustic/Scandinavian, but bright. I stripped the paper off and my husband mudded and sanded skim coats over the plaster to make the walls flat and even. We sanded the floor and re-stained it. The walls are Snowfall White by Benjamin Moore. All that is left are curtains and a large area rug.
